Inflammatory pain is the “common denominator” of several pathologies which produce patient's disability. Nonsteroidal antinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used as first line drugs to relief this symptom. Ketoprofen is a NSAID of the propionic acid family with demonstrated efficacy in the treatment of both acute and chronic painful conditions, and a distinguished safety profile. Moreover the availability of different pharmaceutical formulations can cover a large spectrum of medical requests. Following a brief note on the usefulness of ketoprofen against several forms of acute pain, this report points out to the role of a new extended-release formulation that maintains therapeutic plasma ketoprofen concentrations for up to 24 hours. Extended-release ketoprofen is a good choice for the symptomatic treatment of various rheumatic diseases, in which a once-day administration may help improve patients’ compliance.
