With the addition of 1,2,4-triazole or imidazole to aqueous solutions 0.1 M in glycine and 0.1 M in trimetaphosphate at room temperature, pH range 6.7-8.9, the yield of triglycine is improved by a factor of 10 to 20; the best yields are obtained with 1,2,4-triazole. The yield of triglycine rises with the concentration of added 1,2,4-triazole. At pH 9.9-10.7, as in the case of imidazole, the addition of 1,2,4-triazole has no influence on the yield of triglycine. The pH range of 6.7-8.9 is compatible with that of the primitive oceans. The possible mechanisms by which the yield of triglycine is increased by imidazole and 1,2,4-triazole are discussed as well as the possible role these 2 azoles might have played during prebiotic chemical evolution.
