Introduction: diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic non-communicabledisease and imposes on individuals major changes in their dailylives. To keep the disease under control, it is necessary thatindividuals change their eating habits and integrate a different,healthy diet totheir daily activities.n. Adherence to diet becomes akey issue for the quality of life and successful treatment. Objective:To understand compliance with dietary recommendations bypatients with type 2 diabetes enrolled in the Hiperdia programat a Primary Health Unit in Pelotas-RS, Brazil. Methodology: Datawas collected through semi-structured interviews with 16 people,analyzed and interpreted using the process of categorizing unitsof meaning, identifying the significant issues and compliance withdietary recommendations. Results: non-compliance with dietaryguidelines occurs mainly by difficulties in recreating eating habitsdue to non-acceptance of dietary restrictions. Conclusion: dietaryrestrictions lead to negative changes in social life and creategaps of knowledge about the disease, with the consequent needfor a new eating behavior.
