The socio-environmental issues of/in the amazon: materialities in the video "the shaman's message" - a decolonial reading
Abstract
We are experiencing a socio-environmental crisis, with all sorts of events, resulting from human interventions, whose progressive and accentuated impacts affect the environmental and social fields. The considerations on socio-environmental issues constitute an environmental education process. There are several opportunities to do it, and we emphasize here the use of media resources. Thus, we propose, from the materiality of the video "The Shaman's message", through content analysis, under the decolonial lens, to bring out the diversity of contents related to socio-environmental issues, notably from/in the Amazon, necessary for education, bringing an indigenous voice and their cosmovisions. The video analysis resulted in three categories: (1) appropriation, violence, and colonization, (2) colonized "Amazonian nature" and (3) the Shaman's message as a manifesto to decoloniality of knowledge. The video moved between technology, riches, and impacts on the forest and the natural and social environment, precisely due to the capitalist impulse. In this context, the degenerative appropriation of nature is evident, with consequences for the social field. In teaching and learning contexts, the video "The Shaman's message" can allow students to reflect on socio-environmental problems, notably from/in the Amazon. The video highlights relevant aspects of the Amazon scenario in dialogue with manifestations of capitalism, representing, in the end, criticism of the relationship between human beings and nature; at the same time, it constitutes an invitation to think about a plausible future for humanity, based on the otherness of nature.
