The City of God is a narrative of origins: the origin of humanity, the origin of evil and misfortune. Augustine gives a rational explanation for original sin, but also proposes a peculiar kind of consolation, offered to anyone who is scandalised by the presence of evil in human life. The readers are called to convert their lamentation, not only by trying to understand sin and how it appeared in history but also by confessing their failure to understand the power of evil. Cain and Abel show how the two cities fighting to take over the hearts of men started to exist in human history.
