Leadership and culture are inseparable social phenomena. There is no leadership without culture. Leadership is itself a cultural and cross-cultural activity, dealing with cultural issues and struggles related to leaders and followers in the most varied organizational, regional, national and international contexts. However, research on leadership and culture is still conducted in a segmented and fragmented manner in the academic works, lacking a more robust systematization. Because of the significant increase in intercultural relations and the excessive focus on leaders, it becomes imperative to know and discuss the innovations in such research. This article aims to bring together different research streams about the relationship between leadership and culture, providing an overview of the field, and to point out pesrpectives for future work. For that, a literature review involving leadership and culture was done. The works found were categorized, analyzed, and new perspectives were discussed. In particular, this article highlights the role of leadership in the context of cultural diversity and of cultural practice as important vectors for reflection and production of future research.
