L’edizione 1958 dei «Racconti» di Italo Calvino. Una soglia ermeneutica

Abstract

This paper examines the first edition of I racconti by Italo Calvino (Torino, Einaudi, collection «Supercoralli», 1958) by observing the structure of the volume, both from the point of view of the index and from the point of view of its editorial form. Once the interdependence between the form of an edition and the creation of a literary work has been affirmed, it is possible to launch an investigation into the specific meanings that the volume published in 1958 transmit, in particular starting from an interpretative inspiration given by the author's writing of the cover flap. In that place, in fact, the collection of texts is called a «Novellino of contemporary Italy», an element that allows us to introduce a re-reading of the last section of the volume, the one entitled La vita difficile, in which the following tales are placed (in this order): La formica argentina, La speculazione edilizia and La nuvola di smog. This re-reading considers in particular the question of the intellectual’s role in relation to history and is part of the reflections around the parable of neorealistic literature.
