The purpose of the study is to reveal the experience of using classification systems in information retrieval systems on the example of libraries of German universities. The research methodology is based on the use of generals cientific and special research methods (generalization, systematic, classification, descriptive). Scientific novelty. The article considers the use of classification systems by libraries of German universities during the scientific processing of documents to create additional access points to information. It was found that a necessary factor in the effective use of information retrieval systems of libraries is to provide users with materials that regulate, explain, give examples of the use of a particular classification. It has been found that viewing the library hierarchy and using classification indexes as search elements make it much easier to navigate and search the library catalog. Conclusions. Classification makes it possible to avoid information noise when searching for documents of a certain topic and guarantees receivinga relevant answer to the user’s request, which leads to a significant increase in the quality and efficiency of the functioning of the library’s information and search system. The conclusions state that thanks to the specification of classification indexes in the bibliographic records of documents, the connection of the classification with the electronic catalogof the scientific library is ensured, and additional access points to information sources are created. The experience of organizing funds and providing search tools by classification in the catalogs of libraries of German universitiesis useful for modeling information support of education and research by libraries of Ukraine.
