The Prevalence of Cigarette Smoking and Knowing Status for Diseases Caused by Smoking among Students of University

INTRODUCTION: It was planned as cross sectional and descriptive desing to determine the prevalence of smoking and knowing status for diseases caused by smoking among students of university. METHODS: 602 students who volunteered to participate in the study of simple selected students, studied at Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Social Sciences of a university between September 2014-June 2015. Data were collected with using a questionare of 30 questions. Percentages, frequency, mean, chi-square, standart deviation calculations are performed on collected data. Statistical significance is taken p<.05. RESULTS: 30.7% of students were male, % 69.3 were female. Mean age of students were 20.05+-1,7. Students smoking prevalence was 20.6%. In our study, it was determined that the rate of smoking was higher in men, in social sciences, and in smokers in the family. The main reasons for smoking were depending to a specific problem, curiosity, the influence of friends and affectation. 97.8% and 97.0% and 95.3% and 94.9% and 92.7% of the students knew that smoking was related with diseases of cardiovascular diseases and lung cancer and laryngeal cancer and diseases of cerebrovascular and Cronic Obstructif Pulmoner Disease. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Smoking prevalence was less among the students at faculty of Health than at faculty of Social. Most of Students knew diseases caused smoking.
