Abstract The number of gastric bypass surgery continues to rise with an estimated 150,000 procedures being completed in 2006. As a result, the need for educational resources such as this one for patients and physicians alike has never been greater. This 60-minute webcast provides education about the risks associated with gastric bypass surgery. The lecture and question-and-answer session that follows provides a discussion of overall rates of morbidity and mortality as well as a detailed discussion about anastomotic leak, small bowel obstruction, hemorrhage, and thromboembolism. The resource also provides a simple overview of the technical aspects of laparoscopic gastric bypass surgery. The target audience includes patients, medical students, nurses, residents, and practicing physicians. Webcasts provide a powerful platform by which patients and physicians from around the world can communicate without the need for travel or inconvenience.
