The present work was developed during the International Competition for the Reconstruction of the Church of San Gregorio in L’Aquila (Italy). The Church of San Gregorio was destroyed during the earthquake that affected L’Aquila in 2009, causing repeated collapses of the central and lateral aisles in stone masonry while keeping the apse zone and the adjacent spaces intact. In addition to the seismic event, we must also consider the anthropic impact on the building which consists in the partial demolition of building elements for safety reasons. Through the analysis of case studies comparable with that of the Church of San Gregorio it was possible to propose a redesigning method based on the comparison with successful projects. After this data collection phase it was possible to elaborate a design solution that takes into account a virtual model reconstruction for proposing a draft-compatible project.
