LAW OF LANGUAGE ECONOMY IN MODERN ENGLISH VIRTUAL SPACE (BASED ON AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN PUBLICATIONS)
Abstract
The interaction of media-cultural markers within the cross-cultural communication context causes both the expansion of the publications topical space and the spread of English-language trends aimed at adapting to foreign communicative reality. All these things require a detailed study of the English virtual textual space in terms of language economy. Purpose. The attempt to trace the role and place of language economy means in a certain type of English textual virtual space, based on the interaction of linguo-cultural markers in the context of the social network TWITTER is discussed in the present article. Methodology. In the present study the following general scientific methods of research are used: descriptive method, method of observation, quantification and classification methods accompanied by such special methods as systematic approach to linguistic and semantic analysis, and elements of discourse analysis. Results. The scientific analysis of the language economy means and ways shows that the processes of telescoping, abbreviation, and word formation are the most typical patterns of word building functioning within the communicative space under research which gained a wide popularity among social network users. These days the principle of linguistic economy is reflected mostly in vocabulary. The language economy means perform specific functions in various types of discourse as well as play a particularly important role in the Internet communication. Practical implications. The results of the study can be applied in the sphere of cognitive linguistics and pragmalinguistics, discourse theory, sociolinguistics, and stylistics of the English language.
