Abstract Introduction This resource is an illustrated hypertext introduction to histology, written for students participating in the first-year medical curriculum at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Methods The resource functions as a tutorial and/or review, supplementing classroom activities and textbooks. Resource design, organized by organ system with extensive hyperlinks, allows convenient navigation by beginning or advanced students. The website contains an introduction page, followed by pages devoted to; cardiovascular, respiratory, and renal histology; neural, muscular, and behavior histology; and endocrine, reproductive, and gastrointestinal histology. Self-assessment questions are also provided. Results Students who use this website perform successfully on our in-house evaluations, without regard for attendance at classroom activities. Unsolicited emails from students and faculty around the country and around the world attest to the value of this website. One recent example follows: “I am a second year medical student from Lahore, Pakistan. I landed on your website while looking to find Histology slides online for a quick review before my exams. After going through some sections of your website I realized how good the website really is. It has everything we need to know for our Histology exams and it is very easy to navigate as well. Picture qualities of the cross sections are very good as well. I have really benefited from your work am grateful to you. I've forwarded the link to your website to all my teachers and fellow students. Keep up the good work and thank you for creating this fantastic website for learning Histology.” Discussion The resource covers major systems in the human body, and provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding through self-assessment questions.
