Cemeteries and the human landscape

Abstract

A cemetery’s configuration is closely linked to the territory, the culture and traditions of the communities they belong to. The plants — initially determined by specific reference models, based on the regulations at the time of foundation — undergo transformations over time, extensions, alterations and degradation that make it lose its identity. The essential value of places of collective memory and expression of feeling remain connected to the culture of death. These are the topics included as part of a university research, developing extensive analysis of the Great Camposanto in Messina and cemetery complex on the hillside of Messina and the Aeolian Islands, characterized by the visual presence of the sea and marked by adherence to the morphology of the sites through the use of terracing.
