Aim. The work aims to analyze the lexical and semantic features of the names of the ships of the Russian Navy, to identify the motives and cognitive specifics of the nomination, reflecting the outstanding characteristics of the language personality of the Russian serviceman-onomatet. Methodology. The article describes a method for collecting language material, including the study of openly printed and electronic sources, generalization, interpretation of the results, and discourse analysis. The research material, which is the names of the Russian Navy ships containing the onomastic component, is classified and analyzed from the point of view of morphological affiliation and semantics. Results. In the course of the work, the need to study military chrematonyms created by a serviceman-onomatet was identified, using vivid examples of various lexical-semantic groups of Russian Navy ship names, the reflection in military chrematonyms of background knowledge significant in the professional society was indicated. Research implications. The research results can find application in military education and in the elective course of onomastics in a civilian university.
