In many senses, until the nineteen seventies, the Archipelago of Chiloé (south of Chile) was an out of date territory when compared with Chilean history, chiefly Santiago, the Chilean capital. Chiloé was a true cultural anachronism. In Chiloé, for example, modern poetry began in 1975, a date that has no relation with the history of modern Chilean poetry, or modern international poetry. This article has two goals, firstly to explain why this cultural anachronism occurred in Chiloé and secondly to analyse how Chiloé is represented or imagined in current Chiloéan poetry as Chiloé is affected by the impact of cultural globalisation.
