Academic Detailing: Train-the-Detailer Session
Abstract
Abstract Introduction Academic detailing is a model of instruction that uses physician educators to teach community preceptors in brief, targeted educational sessions. However, training is required for physician educators to become effective academic detailers. Our faculty development team designed, implemented, and evaluated a train-the-detailer session to train physicians who were interested in becoming academic detailers. This train-the-detailer workshop format can be used by anyone interested in using academic detailing in their educational outreach initiatives. Methods In our case, physician educators were trained to present a session using the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) comparative effectiveness data on the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers in stable ischemic heart disease. Examples throughout this resource are from this specific content area. Results We implemented this train-the-detailer session to train physician educators to present AHRQ's comparative effectiveness data on the use of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers in stable ischemic heart disease. The trained detailers then presented at community preceptor sites. The analysis of the postdetailing forms and the focus group showed that detailers found this resource very helpful. Discussion Faculty and educators who are interested in developing/delivering information through academic details can adapt these materials for their specific area of interest. The instructor's guide provides a structure, using a workshop format, to train academic detailers to present any evidenced-based (clinical or educational) topic.
