Cellular systems of the fifth generation (5G) have been optimized to provide reliable coverage and high data rates to mobile users. Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing (GFDM) is a recent multicarrier modulation technique with extremely low out-of-band radiation that makes it an attractive choice for the PHY layer of Cognitive Radio Network (CRN). This paper proposes an optimal power allocation strategy for maximizing the total throughput for the Secondary Users (SUs) under power and interference constraints. Hence, improving their Quality of Service (QoS) in the underlay CRNs. This strategy is based on a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization–Pattern Search (PSO–PS) algorithm used for allocating the optimal amount of power for each subcarrier of the GFDM system that can maximize the SUs throughput. Moreover, the proposed technique will be compared with other optimization techniques. Numerical results are presented to show that using the hybrid PSO–PS algorithm for the GFDM system will increase total data rate for the SUs and achieve good performance compared with the other techniques. Further, the effect of varying some parameters such as SUs number, PUs number and subcarriers number will be performed. The enhancement makes that our proposed algorithm is theoretically sound and useful for practical applications. Keywords: CR, GFDM, Hybrid PSO–PS algorithm, Throughput
