El presente artículo tiene como principal finalidad proponer una reflexión sobre los asentamientos humanos en el mundo y el desarrollo sostenible. Tomando como punto de partida la conferencia de Estocolmo (1972) de Naciones Unidas, se realiza una revisión a los principales acontecimientos y de la documentación institucional que han favorecido la sensibilización hacia todas las cuestiones relacionadas con el medio ambiente, sobre todo en ámbitos urbanos. Se presta especial atención al informe Brundtland en el que aparece el concepto “desarrollo sostenible”, a la I Cumbre de la Tierra, celebrada en Río de Janeiro (1992), en la que se alcanzan los acuerdos internacionales más relevantes y, en el marco europeo, a la I Conferencia Europea de Ciudades Sostenibles, celebrada en Aalborg (1996), en la que se aprueba la carta de Aalborg. Como resultado se asienta progresivamente lo que hoy denominamos la “filosofía de la sostenibilidad” tanto en el ámbito científico como en institucional y en la propia ciudadanía.The present article, he has as principal purpose propose a reflection on the human accessions in the world and the sustainable development. Taking the Conference of Estocolmo (1972) of United Nations as a point of item, there is realized a review of the principal events and of the institutional documentation that they have favored the sensitization towards all the questions related to the environment, especially in urban areas. There lends special attention to the Report Brundtland in which there appears the concept of “sustainable development”, to the I Cumbre of the Earth celebrated in Rio de Janeiro (1992) in which the principal international agreements are reached and, In the european frame, to the I European Conference of Sustainable Cities celebrated in Aalborg (1996) in which the Letter of Aalborg is approved. As a result progressively settles what is now called the "philosophy of sustainability" both in science and in institutional and citizens themselves.
