Privacy in International Law: Regulating the Internet

Abstract

The topic of this issue has been at the forefront of recent discussions on international regulation, and poses many challenges to both regulatory systems and scholars alike. Major scandals, such as those surrounding the NSA, and worries over the privacy terms and conditions of various social media networks have raised questions regarding the ability of individuals to protect their privacy online. This has become a huge concern across the globe. One of the main issues faced is how to protect users’ privacy through regulation of the Internet. This is not an easy feat; vast and continuous developments in technology, including the “Internet of Things”, make it extremely demanding to address this transnational issue effectively. In this issue of GroJIL, the contributions tackle different aspects of the multifaceted problem, making suggestions as to how international law can deal with the fast-paced challenges.
