A Study on Contribution of Social Studies Course to Middle School Stu-dents on Respect for Differences
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate whether the social studies course, which has been taught four years, con-tributes to bringing an important value such as respect for differences or not. This research is a qualitative research. The study group of this study consists of 50 students from Ferit Melen Middle School, 31 students from Hacıbekir Middle School, 29 students from Zeve Middle School and 13 students from Ahmet Yesevi Middle School in 2017-2018 education period. The interview method was used as data collection method in the study. In the study, content analysis method was used. The result of the research evaluated generally, it is concluded that students approach the people with tolerance who do not think like themselves; they put themselves in place of people who have different characteristics; it is important to respect the people in order to live in harmony with other people in society; those who want to live with people have different ethnic and sectarian affiliations in their surroundings share the idea that there a lot of things to be learned from these peoples’ way of life, worshiping and customs; those who don’t want to live with people have different ethnic, religious and sectarian affiliations share the idea that the differences cause to social problems; there is no group who are prejudiced in the com-munity they live in
