The authors consider the socially relevant problem of axiological construction during a conflict of values. Referring to the lexical combinatory power of the word ценности (values) the authors reveal Russian people’s need to protect the system of basic value categories providing national unity. Considering the principle of historicism and relying on the ideas of Russian philosophy, the article puts forward a number of linguo-axiological principles underlying the formation of value categories including the key words of the Russian mentality. The authors analyze the Upbringing Development Strategies in the Russian Federation until 2025 (as of May 29, 2015) passed by the Government of the Russian Federation and formulating the tasks of spiritual and moral upbringing. Owing to the fact that the spiritual and moral values are the nucleus of the multilayered national cognitive space, it is substantiated that it is necessary to create a consistent typology of value categories and its use in schoolchildren’s education and upbringing processes.
