This paper presents the main epistemological traits that characterize the academic production on education policy referenced by the National Association for Research and Graduate Studies (ANPEd). The research examined the abstracts and works approved by the Work Group 5 State and Education Policy, between 2000 and 2009, from the analytical assumptions of the historical and dialectical materialism. The main features point to an overlap of theoretical approaches - they incorporate different paradigms, some linked to dialectical materialism, but they often keep functionalist characteristics.
