The article formulates the problem of finding a methodological basis for understanding the history of Russia. Modern historical cognition needs close interaction with the philosophy of history, which is designed to give a logical form to the diverse material accumulated by historical science. Considering various philosophical approaches that have determined the understanding of the logic of historical development, the authors analyze the cognitive potential of each of them and outline ways to form a unified methodological basis for an adequate and comprehensive study of the history of our country. Objective: to determine the role of the philosophy of history in historical knowledge and to identify conceptual approaches that can become the methodological basis for the formation of a new view of the history of Russia. Method and methodology of the work: dialectical, historical and comparative research methods were used. Results: During the analysis of the existing philosophical approaches, the most productive ones were identified, which can become the basis for forming a new methodological basis for studying the History of Russia. Scope of the results: The results obtained can be applied in historical and philosophical research, as well as in the study of the history of Russia and the further development of the academic discipline “Fundamentals of Russian statehood”.
