This article deals with neoliberal policies in traditional agriculture in Chile and the southern farmers’ demands that the government change these policies. From an initial state of discontent, the farmers’ organizations moved on to action, eventually coming into frontal conflict with the government, mainly with the start of the economic crisis in 1982. It shows how the farmers’ demands led to correction of the predominant neoliberal dogmas between 1983 and 1985. By means of the definition of price bands and a purchasing power, among other measures, traditional agriculture managed to get out of bankruptcy. The article is based on an exhaustive review of governmental sources and regional press.
