The article lists the results of the empirical research of collective symbolical coping, which fulfills the function of the unemployed people adaptation to the new socio-economic conditions of their vital activities. The loss of job and - as effect - change of economic status make the unemployed comprehend this situation on a mental level and work out specific steps to adapt to it. The research sets its goal as identifying factors constructing social representations playing the role of collective symbolical coping. The research analyzes the factors “with constant effect”: duration of the unemployed status, family income level and subjective economic status. The sample of the unemployed includes 393 individuals - all residents of Nizhniy Novgorod region. It has been shown that the shorter unemployed status duration for respondents the more often they prefer active means of coping with difficult situation in their lives, and the less often they are inclined to withdrawing from solving problems. The decline of a subjective economic status of the unemployed determines their acceptation of a job loss situation as unavoidable, actualizes their emotional feelings of uselessness, makes them feel unwanted and accompanies depressive state.
