STUDY OF PROVERBS REGARDING TO THE VALUES IN SOCIAL STUDIES

In this study, proverbs, one of the literary products of Turkish culture, are analized regarding to the values in social studies. 516 proverbs were foundin 2005 Social Studies Education Programme, which was examined in this context, from 4th to 7th grade, covering eight education areas and 20 values. The study was executed with the descriptive survey model.In this study, the values of “caring about family unity, being just, independence, peace, freedom, being scientific, industriousness, solidarity, sensibility, honesty, aesthetic, tolerance, hospitality, caring about being healthy, respect, love, responsibility, cleanliness, patriotism, helpfulness” are discussed.In these values, the value of being just, with 103 proverbs, is found the most, and the value of patriotism and independency, with 1 proverb, is found the least. Consequently, it is determined that many proverbs can be used in order to transmit the values, taking part in the education of social studies.
