Renal teratoma – A rare cause of hydronephrosis

Abstract

Teratomas are non – seminomatous germ cell tumours that arise from pluripotent cells attempting to differentiate into normal tissue. They are now known to typically arise from the gonads as well as from extra-gonadal sites. Teratomas are typically found in children, while the female to male ratio is 1.8:1 [( Devaja and Papadopoulos, 2000; Balaji and Karl, 2019) [1,2]. Renal teratomas are rare, with the majority of published data limited to case reports (Balaji and Karl, 2019; Idrissi-Serhrouchni et al., 2013) [2,3]. Furthermore, teratomas often present as a distinctly enlarging mass, but its association with hydronephrosis is very uncommon (Idrissi-Serhrouchni et al., 2013; Wheeler et al., 1983) [3,4]. Hydronephrosis in the infant is a most common complaint, emphasizing the importance to document its association with this atypical disease. Herein, describes the covert presentation of a primary renal teratoma producing infantile hydronephrosis. The steps in management would be reviewed against the relevant literature.
