Abstract
The author of the present study deals with the crucial and topical problems concerning both the comparative studies and area/cultural studies as we ll as the history and theory of national literatures and the comparative studies and their methodology in general. Commenting upon the volumes of the History of the Literary Cultures of East-Central Europe the author arrives at several critical conclusions which even appear in the title of the immense project - "literary cultures" and "East-Central Europe". He accentuates the necessity to be very careful and take into account not only contemporary, topical state of things, the contemporary more or less political status of literature, but also the historie structures which emerge from the deep basis of mentalities and cultures of the past. The author also deals with the theory of literary history as a manifestation of dialogue of cultures also in connection with area studies and comparative literary studies. He accentuates the importance of regarding history of literature as part of the history of arts and cultures. The final passages are devoted to the samples of Japanese Russian studies and the consequences of these researches concerning the problems of the Russian phenomenon both in the past and in the present.
