Despite the fact that it involves the whole of society, the social and political dynamics of the present crisis of Brazilian democracy is due to the social struggles that mobilize the middle classes with access to higher education. A strong indication in this sense is the social composition of the street demonstrations from 2013 and other data analyzed by the article, such as the increasing access to higher education, that result from the cultural and symbolic changes in recent years, even if with no structural transformation had taken place. These changes help understand the ongoing political polarization which threatens democracy.
