The adoption in 1965 of the declaration Dignitatis Humanae in the last session of the II Vatican Council meant the pistol shot for a change in the situation of non-Catholics in Spain, until then subject to a regime of mere tolerance. Discussions on religious freedom that took place in Rome were followed with great interest in our country, both by politicians and by the Spanish governing church, since it involved breaking the status of Catholic confessional State which was valid for centuries. In this article we try to show the evolution that occurred in the perception of the news that would bring religious freedom to the Francoist state.
