Devenir une First World Woman : stratégies migratoires et migrations par le mariage
Abstract
Based on a fieldwork in the Philippines with women engaged/married with foreigner men, this article shows how the lines between matrimonial and migratory strategies are often blurred. Marriage market globalization, as well as colonial history and economic system (particularly the Philippine labor-force export policy) elucidate marriage migrations and “mail-order marriages”. From women’s standpoint, expectations resulting from their gender, class and race position can be fulfilled by marrying a foreigner man.
