J.M.W. Turner’s hyperbolic and experimental use of the colour yellow would often evoke surprise from his contemporaries. While often discussed as one of the main entry points of critical discourses on his work, the study of colour has often neglected its material dimension. This article proposes a reassessment of the importance of yellow, less as a colour, than as material pigments and substances carrying commercial and epistemological values in Turner’s work.
