Use of tick cell lines in studies of tick-borne pathogens

Introduction and objective Ticks are blood-feeding parasites of animals and humans belonging to arthropods. They transmit pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, including Borrelia burgdorferi (causative agent of Lyme borreliosis) and tick-borne encephalitis virus. Cell cultures derived from vector tissues are tools for a wide range of in vitro studies. The aim of the study was to review the literature on tick cell lines and their application in scientific research. Review methods. Brief description of the state of knowledge The first tick cell line derived from Rhipicephalus appendiculatus was described in 1975. Currently, more than 50 continuous cell lines from various species have been derived. Most of them are embryonic and derived from eggs laid by female ticks. Four cell lines are available from the most common tick in Poland – Ixodes ricinus. The lines are widely used in research on the biology and physiology of ticks, their resistance to acaricides, and the understanding of the immune system of ticks. Cultures have been used in the study of vector-pathogen interactions, the characteristics of microorganisms, and for the isolation of from the environment. Summary The effectiveness of tick cell lines as a research tool is confirmed by an increasing number of scientific reports. Their use may be important in the development of effective diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of tick-borne diseases. Tick cell lines may be a useful tool in future research through the development of new research methods.
