Abstract This resource consists of eight electronic flash-card units developed to provide learners with drill-and-practice exercises reviewing peripheral nervous system essential terminology and associated definitions. The objective for creating the courseware was to stimulate self-directed learning and to integrate anatomical terminology into a structured format that is readily accessible for local and distance learning. The flash cards are user friendly and achieve a dimension that cannot be attained by more conventional methods. Since implementation of the courseware in 2001, 8% more students have scored correct answers on written exam questions. Learner surveys rate the flash cards as the fourth highest among the resources provided for the human structure course. Organizing content into discrete electronic exercises is highly effective in teaching learners essential terminology without overwhelming them all at once. Exposing preclinical students to interactive flash cards motivates learning and enhances memory. The learner is not a passive observer but instead is a participant engaged in an interactive activity. These observations are supported by recent improvements in learner performance on block and subject shelf exams.
