Collective Nicknames of the Inhabitants of the Eastern Vologda-Kostroma Frontier: Materials for a Dictionary
Abstract
The publication covers the collective nicknames registered by the Ural Federal University Toponymic Expedition in 2009–2013 on the territory of the eastern Vologda-Kostroma frontier: in Vokhomsky, Oktyabrsky, Pavinsky, Sharyinky Districts of Kostroma Region and in Nikolsky District of Vologda Region. The dictionary entries include collective nicknames as headwords which can have onomasiological variants with a localizing element derived from the corresponding place name, e. g. VODOKHLYOBY and VOKHMYAKY-VODOKHLYOBY , the names designating inhabitants of either an administrative unit (village, township, selsoviet) or a geographically isolated territorial unit (e. g. a river basin). The entries optionally provide examples, parallel names of the same entity (e. g. BUSARY // NEMYTIKI ), the meaning of dialectal words and information about the names of neighboring entities created in the same pattern (e. g. VORONY — SKVORTSY ). The publication contains a geographical song which includes characterological names of the inhabitants of Petretsovsky Selsoviet of Vokhomsky District, Kostroma Region (such names, as to their semantic and functional features, are close to collective names which also can be found in geographical songs).
