One (if not the first) way of becoming acquainted with a foreign culture that springs to mind is the direct immersion achieved by moving to live within, and be part of the society that particular culture is specific to. Yet, should this not be possible (or even when it is), reading literature written either by expatriates leading their life amidst the culture in question or by natives that lived abroad for a while, being prompted to draw comparisons between their culture and the foreign one, is an important stage that can successfully introduce one to the mysteries of the covert part of what makes the specificity of life somewhere. This paper aims at drawing a parallel between the objective information and the subjective one carried by two culturally-loaded words specific to life in the French capital, as presented by a native-born Parisian.
