A long history can be traced back to the practice of pious foundations in Christian and Muslims societies as well, however, there is no comparative research concerning their aims, operations and results. Waqf in Islamic law, the act of founding a charitable trust, and, hence the trust itself. One of the most significant forms of Islamic religious schools operated by waqfs is the pondok-system in Malaysia. Christians also have pious foundations that share the same goals. There are similarities and divergences, though both legal institutions can be used as operator of schools in all grades of education.
