Watt's writings on Islam, particularly his biographical works on the Prophet Muhammad, are now considered an authority on the subject. They are not only diligently well-researched, but are path-breaking in that they permanently and decisively answered certain doubts and suspicions that were raised in the Western scholarly study of Islam and Muhammad. Moreover, his objective stance on many issues has caused a methodological shift in the way Islam is approached in the West. His work and opinions have both theoretically and in practical terms have helped the Westerners towards an unbiased understanding and estimation of the Islamic culture. Watt's works will, in the near future, remain significant, they will continue to be studied, and indeed, continue to be refuted where necessary.
