¿Educación para todos? Pueblos originarios y educación en México
Abstract
In this contribution, we will focus on education for indigenous peoples in Mexico, its characteristics, problems and current challenges, from different angles. Starting from a brief overview of language and education policy in relation to indigenous peoples at the international level and its repercussions at the national level over time, we will then focus on one of the areas with the largest indigenous population in all of Mexico, the Yucatecan peninsula. We will compare education-related parameters and data compiled in recent studies and statistics, such as the 2020 Censo de Población y Vivienda 2020 (INEGI 2020a y 2020b), with an insider’s look based on testimonies collected in Yucatán, Campeche and Quintana Roo. We will conclude with some reflections on the scope, challenges and perspectives in the education sector for the indigenous population and the effects they may have on the vitality of Mexican indigenous languages.
