Letters of N. F. Krasnoseltsev to I. V. Pomyalovsky: Review of the Content and Publication of the Text
Abstract
This article analyzes the life and research paths of two prominent representatives of pre-revolutionary domestic science and presents a publication of letters from the professor of Kazan Theological Academy, and since 1889 of Novorossiysk University N. F. Krasnoseltsev (1845–1989) to the professor of St. Petersburg University I. V. Pomyalovsky (1845–1906). The letters under consideration, in the amount of 36 units, are stored in the Department of Manuscripts of the Russian National Library in St. Petersburg in the I. V. Pomyalovsky Fund. The chronological framework of the letters covers the period from 1885 to 1897, when the scientists had already achieved some success in both scientific and social activities. The introductory article analyzes the life path of both scientists and the historical context of events that influenced the formation of their scientific interests, on the basis of which the author comes to the conclusion about a certain research potential of the source considered, reflecting the processes that took place in education and science in the second half of the 19th century. The letters submitted for publication were written by N. F. Krasnoseltsev. The analysis of the content of the material made it possible to verify the presence of several levels of context — from the description of everyday life through personal understanding of events to the analysis of intra-institutional discourse. This publication of letters is a presentation of typed and commented archival materials in accordance with modern spelling standards. In the subscript to the published letters, the author tried to characterize not only the personalities or related facts appearing in the letters, but also to assess the context of events, involving secondary published and unpublished sources.
