Peats are organic materials formed by accumulating decayed plant residues in acidic environments saturated with water. Peats are used in different fields such as agriculture, fuel, thermal insulation, forestry, medicine and textiles. Peatlands are important as they are microclimatic areas rich in biodiversity and record paleogeographic data. In this study, the spatial and temporal changes of the Gölbaşı Basin peatlands were investigated. The study islargely based on field work. In addition, Landsat satellite data of 1984, 2000, 2020, orthophotos of 1973, 1985, 1999 and 2020, Google Earth images and current drone footage were used to determine the temporal variation of peat areas. ArcGIS 10.3.1 software was used for the analysis and visualization of the data. In this study, it was determined that the Gölbaşı Basin peatlands were 1540.64 hectares in 1973, which decreased to 897.22 hectares in 2020, and the areal shrinkage reached 41.76% in this period. Peat mining, agricultural activities and the opening of drainage channels have been effective in the spatial and temporal change of peatlands. Considering these data in the preparation of the watershed management plan is important in terms of sustainable use of peatlands.
