The article presents a multidimensional analysis of the number of passengers transported by rail in 25 European countries in 2015-2019 in terms of assessing the dynamics of changes and observing the regularities governing the phenomenon under consideration. The forecast of the number of passengers transported by rail for 2020-2021 was also made. The obtained results may be used in the future (when data on actually transported people during the COVID-19 pandemic in the countries in 2020-2021 are available) for a comparative analysis of the losses incurred related to the reduction of the number of transported passengers in relation to the forecasts that take into account the regularities ruling the considered phenomenon in the past and should more accurately estimate the lost financial outlays in dynamic terms.
