Zhao et al establish the structure, stability, toxicity and distribution of vespakinin-M (VK) as well as its penetration into the blood–brain barrier in mice. They go on to show that VK promotes functional recovery in mice after ischemia stroke and shed light on the potential underlying mechanisms, which together indicates the potential therapeutic value of targeting VK in stroke therapy.
