This paper establishes a relation between the main natural space management strategies, the conservation units, and the conceptual and practical framework of Geodiversity, Geoheritage, and Geoconservation themes. By means of this theoretical discussion, based on the Brazilian context, we debate the relevance of the abiotic components in the institution of conservation units, the vision that legal instruments present about nature conservation and the importance of these themes for the success of protected areas. We note a biocentric orientation in the Brazilian unit’s creation and management, being necessary to enlarge the conception of nature to a systemic concept that equally includes the importance of biodiversity and geodiversity in the environmental configuration
