Abstract

The objective of this study is to develop a scale that assesses co-dependency among substance users’ significant others and determine the validity and reliability of the scale. Questions are created upon expert views and a draft scale is developed. The draft scale is conducted 10 participants that are randomly assigned. Then a 14-item assessment form is developed which is called Co-Dependency in Substance Use Disorder Scale (CODSUDS). As there is no co-dependency scale developed in Turkish literature, Codependency Assessment Tool (CODAT) is used to make a correlation between CODSUDS. CODSUDS and CODAT are conducted 143 participants who are the significant others of the patients applied Turkish Green Crescent Counselling Center between August 2018-December 2018. The Cronbach’s Alpha Coefficient for the total CODSUDS is 0.76. Interviewers’ total correlation coefficient is 0.82. CODSUDS and CODAT correlation is 0.46. Explanatory Factor Analysis revealed 5 factors which explains %45.4 of the total variance. These 5 factors are called Altruism, Worry, Raising no Objection, Avoidance and Guiltiness. Sampling adequacy is calculated 0.670 and the sample of the study is found adequate. The findings Show that CODSUDS is a valid and reliable scale that can be used to assess co-dependency in substance use disorders.
