The objective of this work was to evaluate the bioprotective effect of Croton lechleri L. “grade blood” against the toxicity of meloxicam in Allium cepa L. “onion”. 2.5 cm roots were developed in fifteen bulbs, then they were exposed for four hours to three treatments: T1 (100 ml of distilled water), T2 (meloxicam 1%), T3 (meloxicam 1% plus 20 uL of C. lechleri). The roots treated with meloxicam 1% exhibited clastogenic-type chromosomal aberrations: as bridges (5.3%) and isolated chromosomes (1.4%), another aneugenic-type aberration: as helical chromosomes (2.5%), adhesive chromosomes (3.3%) and without aberrations (87.5%). While the group that received meloxicam 1% more grade blood presented bridges (2.1%), helical chromosomes (0.5%), adhesive chromosomes (0.4%) and without aberrations (97%). Meloxicam showed high cytotoxicity (4.5% mitotic factor with phase disorder and rootless growth paralysis) and genotoxicity. It is concluded that grade blood has a bioprotective effect against meloxicam.
