The main objective of the research, from which this text derives, was to determine the strengths and weaknesses of Habermas´ proposal on the role of religion in the public sphere. These assessments are based on the viability of Habermas´ perspective to analyze a concrete debate developed at the Colombian Congress (the debate on same-sex marriage). This papers aims to illustrate Habermas´ proposal with a particular discussion in which Habermas himself participates, that is, the discussion on genetic engineering, cloning, liberal eugenics and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. For this part of the research we used a reconstructive methodology insofar since the objective was to present a critical analysis of Habermas´ arguments. The paper concludes, thus, by expounding a critical perspective of Habermas´ view in which we show that his arguments are not coherent with other fundamental elements of his philosophy.
