The two former national training schools of watch-making in Besançon (now the Jules Haag polyvalent lycée) and optics in Morez (now the Victor Berard polyvalent lycée) generated important collections of movable heritage. Undertaken by the General Inventory services of the Franche-Comté region, their study gave rise to some thinking about the notion of ‘heritage artefacts’, going beyond the usual selection criteria of age and appearance in order to include, by anticipation, tools and equipment of recent construction and still in use. If most of the interesting pieces from the watch-making school were given to the Besançon Time Museum, the collection at the school of optics is still presented in situ, raising the question of the sustainability of this preservation.
