Geotourism at the mining site is setting a trend in many countries, as this results into preservation of mining-geoheritage and brings extra revenue. In this paper we have presented the findings of a study on Sonepur-Bazari open cast mine in Eastern India undertaken to find out the potential for development of mining geotourism. For that criteria-based assessment has been done following published literature. Information about the mine is obtained through field visits and personal communication supported by online resources. The assessment is followed by a SWOT analysis which highlights the opportunities that can pave way for mining geotourism and accordingly suggestions for primary measures are made. This study shows that many attributes in this mine can be projected as geotourism assets. Human-made landscapes resembling mountains and valleys, different stages of the succession of plant species on the dumping grounds, fossils, mining activities through different types of machinery could be designed to encourage visitation. The analysis has revealed that with planned execution of the idea through protection and preservation of geotourism attractions, the establishment of basic tourism infrastructure, proper advertisement and promotion of the site, the successful development of mining geotourism is possible.
